This special two-panel preview debuted as a printed postcard at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, July 22nd – 26th. We printed them up to promote the following month’s relaunch of Atrox Comics in the new sculpted format. Here’s a photo of the Team Atrox/Beastlies table in the Small Press Area on the convention floor:

Emory and Leslie at the Team Atrox/Beastlies table. Don't be put off by the incredibly high production values of our display! We are as accessible and down-to-earth an operation as we've always been.

And for those of you who really want a glimpse into the inner workings of our complex, shrewdly-conceived marketing strategies, here’s the strip as it appeared on the postcard:

Check out that double-sided advertising action! I know. It’s like Mad Men up in this piece.

Upon reexamination, my favorite layout detail of this strip is the way that it employs this Sergio Leone-style framing logic, where Atrox cannot see the child in Panel #1 (and doesn’t seem to discover him and be disturbed by the reveal until Panel #2) because the child is outside of the frame, even though it is a clear day in the middle of an open field and there is really nothing obstructing Atrox’s view.

-Frank
